Wiring looms and shielding are used on wires,in order to protect them from rubbing against engine components, and from the dirt and grime commonly found in the engine compartment. Besides protecting the wire from the elements, the shielding also serves as an insulator so that the current can’t jump from the wire to another metal component, causing a short in the system.
The material favored in making this shielding is a rubber or silicone substance because of its desirable insulating properties however, other materials may be used. The color of the looms and shielding can be placed so that each wire can be identified in the engine compartment. For example, a green coating can only be used on spark plug wires, while a blue coating can be used for wires that lead to specific sensors. Having the ability to do this makes maintenance and diagnosis easier when work needs to be done on the vehicle.
