Tire Valve Stems

Tire valve stems are a self contained valve that opens to allow air into the tube, and then closes by using the tubes pressure to keep it shut and sealed. Some valve stems may incorporate springs in the stem on low pressure setups to provide added pressure against the opening so that it can’t open and allow air to escape. This stem setup is used on almost every vehicle ever made because it is extremely dependable and requires little to no maintenance. Adjusting the amount of air in the tube is very easy and can be done at home with a small air pump. Since the stem size is the same on every vehicle, finding a pump to adjust the amount of air in the tires is easy and can be found at most local gas stations or automotive shops if you don’t have one yourself. Wheel Caps

Wheel Caps
Wheel Caps

A wheel cap is the center piece of material on a wheel that protects and hides the ends of the axle and the lug nuts. In the center of the rim near the axle, there is a spindle nut and bearings which need to be protected by this cap because they can wear faster or not function properly if they get dirty. Protecting all the inner components with a cap will also ward off corrosion which can be unsightly and even weaken the integrity of all the metal parts. These caps can be attached to the wheel with the use of spring clips or the vehicles lug nuts which can fasten over the cap to hold it in place. Replacing this cap is common because it can fall off when hitting a curb or large bump. The most secure caps are the ones that are held in place with the lug nuts but that style has started to fade in modern vehicles. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Covers

Wheel Covers

Wheel covers are an accessory that can be used on some wheels to enhance the look of the factory wheel without having to go out and buy expensive new rims. These wheel covers are used on wheels that are made out of stamped steel because the steel is left unfinished which makes it unsightly unlike an alloy wheel which is normally already styled and finished. These alloy wheels still use a wheel cap which is allot smaller and only covers the center part of the wheel were the lug nuts are. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Dust Shields

Wheel Dust Shields
Wheel Dust Shields

Wheel dust shields are designed to conceal rusty break components and protect the vehicles rims from break dust which will make them dirty and hard to clean. This break dust can cause the wheels finish to corrode and deteriorate which is why it is so important to block the dust before it becomes a problem. These shields are made out of a high strength metal such as steel or aluminum so that they can stand up to the harsh conditions experienced in the wheel. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Locks & Nuts

Wheel Locks & Nuts

Lug nuts are fasteners which are used on a vehicle to secure the wheel on a vehicle. After putting the wheel through the studs, the nuts are tightened onto the stud which is what keeps the wheel secured onto the axle. Some configurations replace the nuts with bolts which are usually covered up by the wheel cap or a plastic nut that clips onto it. Lug nuts are used because they can be removed and put back on quickly in the event of a flat tire where maintenance needs to be done in a less than ideal location. The number of nuts for each wheel will vary depending on the size of the vehicle and its tires. Larger vehicles tend to have more lug nuts because they weigh more which means that more pressure is being put on the nuts when driving. It is important to tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench so that adequate pressure is being put on all the nuts and not just one. Since lug nuts are being put under tremendous strains, they are typically made out of a strong metal such as hardened steel. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Spacers

Wheel Spacers

Wheel spacers can be used on a vehicle in between the wheel and the hub so that the wheel sticks out further. The main advantage of having a wider wheel base is that it makes the vehicle more stable when going over rough terrain or when entering corners fast which is why off road and high performance vehicles usually have them. Another reason why this may need to be done is to account for clearance issues when installing larger wheels or when adjusting the suspension. Having a wider wheel base will also enhance the vehicles look by making it look more aggressive in its stance. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Studs & Screws

Wheel Studs & Screws

Wheel studs are threaded fasteners that are permanently mounted to the vehicles hub. After the wheel has been placed on these studs, lug nuts are fastened onto the end of them which will secure the wheel. The number of studs on each wheel will vary depending on the size and weight of the vehicle. A heavy vehicle is likely to use five or more studs while a small vehicle may only use four. Some vehicles may also use bolts to secure the wheel instead of studs. These bolts would screw directly into the hub to provide that same fit that a stud would give. There are many different size studs and bolts that can fit almost any vehicle no matter the size of the wheels or if spacers are being used. Since these components are put under so much stress and tension, the metal is usually heat treated to prevent bending when hitting potholes or bumps in the road. Continue Reading -->

Wheel Weights

Wheel Weights

Wheel weights are used on vehicles to ensure that all the wheels are perfectly balanced and have an even distribution of mass. A good sign that a vehicle is not properly balanced is if there is vibrations in the wheel or even the in the entire vehicle as speeds increase. These weights have typically been made out of lead over the years but due to lead poisoning concerns zinc and steal are now being used as an effective alternative. Balancing of the wheels is normally done at a tire shop when the vehicle is getting maintenance. Continue Reading -->
