Compasses have been used in vehicles since the invention of vehicle's. Compasses were the first method of gauging the direction of travel. Using a compass was especially important before the interstate system was completed, due to the fact that the roads were not paved, and there were no signs to inform the driver of which direction they were heading. Modern vehicle's which have a compass installed in them, have digital compasses, which are built in to the vehicle's dashboard,or displayed on the rear view mirror, and inform the driver of the direction they are going.
Aftermarket compasses are available, and can be purchased in their original design, or digital. Aftermarket compasses are typically mounted to the dashboard, allowing the driver to easily read it, without taking their attention off of the road. Due to progression, compasses in vehicle's are not as necessary as they once were, however, they are a valuable tool when needed.
