Manual Transmission
Manual Transmission Example

A manual transmission works by using a clutch to transfer the torque from the engine, into the gears of the transmission. The driver of the vehicle is able to select the gear desired. This is done by moving the shifter from one gear to another, while pressing the clutch in. Once the gear has been selected the driver then releases the clutch, resulting in the transmission being engaged. There is also a reverse gear in the manual transmission. Below are the major components of a manual transmission, click on the title of the component to learn more about them.

Manual Transmission Fly Wheel Bolts

Flywheel bolts are special bolts designed to attach the flywheel to the engine. A flywheel bolt is designed to withstand high rotational forces applied to the side of the bolts, a failure of a flywheel bolt is typically cause by shearing. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Flywheels

A flywheel is mounted to the rear end of the crankshaft in an automotive engine. The purpose of the flywheel is to do two things. On the outside edge of the flywheel there is a ring gear, this gear is engaged by the starter which spins the flywheel when starting a motor. The other and main purpose of the flywheel is to transfer the energy of the engine to the transmission. This is accomplished through the use of a clutch, only vehicles with a manual transmission will have a flywheel, automatic transmissions use a flex plate. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Gears

The gears in a manual transmission are available in different types to fit the purpose of the vehicle. Within these types there are different gear ratios available to accomplish different performance goals. The types available are a sliding-mesh gear, a constant-mesh gear and a synchromesh gear. A Sliding Mesh Gear style of transmission is rarely used today in a regular car. It is more commonly seen in a race car, agricultural equipment and older heavy duty trucks. In a sliding mesh gearbox, straight cut spur gear sets spin freely, and must be synchronized by the driver. This is done by trying to match engine revolutions to the speed of the vehicle to avoid gear clash. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Overhaul Gasket Sets

A manual transmission has fluid inside it to keep the gears, bearings and synchronizers lubricated. It is important that the transmission keep that fluid inside, this is done through the use of gaskets. Once a transmission is opened up for an overhaul old gaskets need to be thrown away and replaced with a new gasket set. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Shifters & Kits

Manual transmission shifters are used to cycle through the gears in a manual transmission. Over time the connections and or linkage can wear out and require to be replaced. It is important to use a shifter that matches the transmission that it will be installed on as shifters are not universal. There are many options available you to pick from, some are designed for function, looks, performance or a combination of desired attributes. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Bell Housing & Scatter Shields

A bellhousing is a component of the transmission that is either bolted on or permanently fixed to the transmission. Most manufacturers produce the bellhousing from cast aluminum to reduce weight. The bellhousing is what encases the flywheel and clutch and bolts to the engine. Most manual transmission vehicles also have the starter motor attached to the bellhousing which allows it to engage the flywheel. The bellhousing name was derived from its shape, it looks like a bell. Read More -->

Manual Transmission Assembly

A manual transmission assembly is a replacement transmission for a vehicle. A manual transmission assembly will contain all the gears pre-installed, there may also be a hardware pack to install the transmission on the vehicle. There are a couple of reasons why a new assembly would be desired. The most common reason is that a new transmission is needed for an engine swap or higher performance ratings. Read More -->
