The thermostat housing in a vehicle, is designed to direct fluid flow, coming from the radiator hose. This housing often has a sensor built into it, which can calculate the coolant temperature. Thermostat housing is commonly made out of metal and plastic, and is available in many shapes and sizes. Thermostat housings are able to manage the changing fluid temperatures, which may cause cracking over time, causing a leak. However, the housing has a gasket in between it, and the device it is connected to, making leaks less likely. This gasket also ensures that there is no metal to metal contact, between the housing and the device it’s connected to. The gasket is designed to be impervious to fluids, lubricants, and antifreeze. When replacing a thermostat, the gasket must be replaced as well, to ensure a proper seal.
