A roll pan is a component which is attached to the back of a vehicle, and provides smooth looking lines around the back bumper. The roll pan is used to eliminate any protruding portions of the vehicles original bumper. Roll pans are most commonly used on trucks and other larger vehicles because they stick up higher off the ground which makes the bumper much more noticeable. Trucks are also more likely to have larger bumpers so that strap or towing balls can be easily attached to it.
Using a roll pan means that some safety features that are added with the use of a full size bumper will be lost. Because of this, roll pans may be illegal in some states or countries because they don’t qualify as a real bumper. Since many roll pans are extremely curvy and sleek, the license plate which is normally housed on the back bumper may need to be remounted somewhere else. This is yet another concern for some people since some states require the license plate to be in a certain place. Most companies that make roll pans recognize this and will try to build in a spot around the roll pan for the license plate without sacrificing any looks or creating additional sharp lines.
There are many different materials used to make roll pans and some of these include fiberglass, ABS plastic, and coated metal. With the advances in fiberglass technology, most roll pans are constructed out of this material because it is light, easy to install, and extremely durable. Roll pans that are made out of metal are also popular on larger vehicles like trucks because it provides the good looks of a roll pan without having to sacrifice performance or capabilities that can only be provided by a metal bumper.
Installation of a roll pan can be a very easy or difficult job. The level of difficulty will depend on the type of roll pan being used and the size of the existing bumper mounts which will be exposed once the bumper is removed. If the vehicle has small bumper mounts, installing a roll pan will only require some bolting to existing mounting points. A vehicle that has large bumper mounts may require some altering before a roll pan can be installed. The type of material being used will also play a huge role in how hard it will be to install a roll pan. More flexible materials such as ABS plastic or fiberglass can be worked into place much easier than a solid piece of metal.
