A rev limiter is a device that is attached to an engine,in order to restrict its maximum rotational speed. Rev limiters are used,in order to prevent engine damage and to prevent drivers from pushing a high performance vehicle to its maximum engine potential. Rev limiters are often used with a shift light which indicates when the desired RPM is reached and a change in gear is required.
Rev limiters work by interrupting the power distributed to the spark plugs which prevents the engine from operating above a pre-determined RPM level known as the red line. Although rev limits are most common at peek engine performance, they can also be programmed and used at lower RPM’s in high performance engines. This is done in order to provide the maximum amount of traction in each gear so that the vehicle can accelerate faster. When using a rev limiter at a slower speed it is recommended to use multiple stage ignition modules which offer greater RPM limit control. Rev limiters are also commonly used in commercial vehicles so that greater fuel efficiency is achieved and forces the drivers to drive the vehicle more gently. A rev limiter that is used for this purpose is often referred to as a "governor" and must be reset or changed with special diagnostic equipment.
