A pinion yoke is installed into the axle housing, and connects the driveshaft to the pinion gear. The pinion yoke looks like a coupling with four connections. The u-joint connects to the pinion yoke, and driveshaft. A pinion yoke is installed by pressing the pinion yoke on to the pinion gear shaft, which has splines that hold the pinion yoke, in the proper position.
Most installations also have a bolt, that is screwed on to the end of the pinion gear, for security. Removal of a pinion yoke often requires a gear puller, in order to get the pinion yoke off the splines, of the pinion gear.
