Penetrating oil is a low-viscosity oil that can be used for general tasks to lubricate, clean, or free up rusted mechanical parts. This type of oil is most commonly used for the latter of these things because it is made using an extremely thin solution which has the ability to seep into cracks and crevices which other oils can’t get to. Using penetrating fluids as general-purpose lubricants is not advisable, because such oils are relatively volatile. As a result, much of the penetrating oil will evaporate in a short amount of time, leaving little residual lubricant. Since the viscosity of this oil is so low, it is typically found in aerosol canisters which allow you to apply it in smaller spaces accurately.
