Ignition accessories are components that are used on a vehicle,in order to make the engine start-up more efficient and effective. Since engine performance is a mix of many variables, these accessories are focused around timing and allowing other components in the engine to work together. Failure of an ignition accessory can cause a shut down of the vehicle,and sometimes damage to internal engine components. Because of this, it is important to ensure that all the ignition accessories are dialed in and installed properly before using a vehicle for long periods of time without maintenance.

An ignition coil is used on a vehicle to transform the batteries low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs which are what ignite the fuel/air mixture. Ignition coils can have an internal resistor or an external resistor to limit the current flowing into the coil from the car's 12 volt supply. The wires used to connect the ignition coil to the distributor or the distributor to the spark plugs are called spark plug wires. These spark plug wires differ from other wires because they are specially made to carry the excess voltage that is created for the spark plugs. The ignition coil system replaced the magneto ignition system that was used in early vehicles because it wasn’t reliant on the engines speed to produce the high voltage needed for start-up. Ignition retard devices are used on an engine to increase the vehicles performance by making it cycle more efficiently. Ignition retard is when the engine control unit senses that the accelerator is at max throttle and so it kicks in to prevent the vehicle from exceeding top speed. There are some devices that are made to trick the engine control unit into thinking the vehicle is not under maximum power when it really is. Taking this limit off the vehicle will give a slight boost to the amount of horsepower the engine can produce. Although using a retard device on the engine might limit some of its performance, it is still important to use when looking at the longevity of the engine because of its ability to detect engine knock which can potentially be harmful to an engine if it is bad enough. Ignition timing devices are used on an engine to ensure that the piston is in the right part of the combustion chamber near the end of the compression stroke. If the piston is not in the right place, it will cause the fuel and air mixture to not completely burn or it will cut the pistons cycle short before it gets all the way to the top of the combustion chamber. Both of these things will reduce the engines power output because the engine would not be running efficiently. The most common of these devices would be a switch which can have a component attached to it that is waiting to be activated. An example of this would be a vehicle that is set to release nitrous at 4,000 RPM in the fifth gear only.
