Heater Core
Heater Core

The heater core is a simple radiator-like component in a vehicle, and is the heart of the heating system. The heater core works by receiving hot coolant from the vehicle's engine, and winding it through a tube, that consists of conductive aluminum or brass, and is located inside the heater core. After passing through the heater core the coolant is sent back to the engine were it is reheated and the process repeats itself. Once the engine is warmed up, the coolant that flows to the heater core is held at a constant temperature through the use of a thermostat. When a person inside the vehicle wants to reduce the amount of heat, less coolant is sent to the heater core which causes the air to not pick up as much heat when passing by the fins and the tube. Some systems will redirect air around the heater core and mix it with warm air before sending it out through the vents into the cabin as well. The heater core has fins attached to the main tube which expands the surface area that the heat can transfer to. A heater fan then blows air toward the fan fins which warms the air and sends it through vents that lead into the passenger compartment. Typically the heater core is located inside the dashboard on the passenger side. If a heater core begins to leak it will typically leak inside the car, if you smell anti-freeze or notice a wet carpet it is probably time to replace your heater core.
