Headers & Accessories

A header and its accessories are popular components, on a vehicles exhaust system, and are used to enhance both performance and appearance. A header is basically the same thing as an exhaust manifold except for the fact that it is much simpler and better looking. The header is composed of multiple tubes which are welded together so that they can be bolted to the engine to receive the exhaust gasses. A system that uses a head and its accessories will allow better flow of the exhaust which will therefore increase the engines power and overall performance. Many accessories that are commonly used with a header are directed towards safety and reliability since the pipes of the headers will get extremely hot as the exhaust gasses pass through them.

Exhaust Heat Shields

Exhaust heat shields are used on vehicles to protect other components on the undercarriage from the hot exhaust pipes. Heat shields are typically thin sheets of metal or carbon fiber which are held in place by rods that are connected to the chassis. The heat shield actually sits over the exhaust and not on top of it because the heat from the exhaust could quickly be transferred to the thin heat shield which would make it useless. Without the use of a heat shield nearby components can be damaged if exposed to long periods of direct heat. This is especially true in many newer car which use sensors and many other fragile components which can be easily damaged by the hot exhaust. Since the exhaust resides close to the floor pan, an uncovered exhaust can heat up the interior which can make for an uncomfortable ride for anyone inside. Continue Reading -->

Exhaust Insulation & Header Wrap

Exhaust insulation and header wrap is a material that can be wrapped around the exhaust or any of its components to protect nearby components from being damaged by the heat. This material that is wrapped around the exhaust is extremely strong and is normally made out of fiberglass or some other kind of synthetic material. These materials are able to withstand temperatures of up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit without degrading which is why it makes the ultimate exhaust insulation. There are many different sized exhaust wrap that is available in a variety of widths and lengths. It is best to by skinnier wrap for small overheated spots while that thicker wrap is best when covering a large amount of tubing. Continue Reading -->

Header Bolts & Studs

Header bolts and studs are used to securely mount the header to the engine on a vehicle. Depending on the vehicles setup, bolts or studs may be used to secure the header. Most people would prefer studs because they allow you to align the header on the studs before securing it in place. Even though studs may be preferred overall, a bolt will do just as good of a job as a stud once it is properly tightened in place. Most studs and bolts will also come with premium grade washers which will help provide a more secure fit. Continue Reading -->

Header Collector Gaskets

A header collector gasket is used on an aftermarket header where the primaries merge together. This gasket is placed in between the engine and the header before bolting the two components together. Adding this soft gasket in between the two pieces of metal will create a much better seal which will help ward off exhaust leaks which are annoying and hard to diagnose/fix. These gaskets are normally around .050” thick so that as the header and engine are tightened together, the soft gasket actually deforms in between the two pieces to make the seal. Header Flange Gaskets

A header flange gasket is used on an aftermarket header where the pipe and engine are bolted together. Adding this soft gasket in between the pipe and engine will create a much better seal which will help ward off exhaust leaks which are annoying and hard to diagnose/fix. These gaskets are normally around .050” thick so that as the header and engine are tightened together, the soft gasket actually deforms in between the two pieces to make the seal. Because of this deformation, most flange gaskets should only be used once to ensure a proper seal every time. Since the header and that part of the engine is vulnerable to extremely hot temperatures, the gasket is made out of a material such as copper which will not melt when subjected to that kind of environment. Headers

A header is a component that can replace the exhaust manifold on a vehicle to help produce more power and better performance. Since an exhaust manifold is a bulky block that is made out of cast iron, it doesn’t provide optimum flow. A header is designed to bolt right into the same spot as the manifold and it increases flow by using numerous steel tubes for each exhaust port. Since there is more room for the exhaust to go, everything will run more efficiently which is why the engine produces more power and runs smoother. Since the header provides more power and a better running engine, it is a commonly installed part on many high performance vehicles that are seeking more power. Continue Reading -->
