Header Bolts & Studs
Header bolts and studs are used to securely mount the header, to the engine, on a vehicle. Depending on the vehicle, bolts or studs may be used to secure the header. Most people would prefer studs because they allow you to align the header on the studs before securing it in place. Even though studs may be preferred overall, a bolt will do just as good of a job as a stud once it is properly tightened in place. Most studs and bolts will also come with premium grade washers which will help provide a more secure fit.
These studs and bolts are made out of high strength steel that is typically rated at about 170,000 psi. It is important to get the bolts and studs this tight because the vibrations of the engine running can easily cause the bolt to loosen. Having the bolt or stud loosen can cause exhaust leaks which are very annoying and can be time consuming to diagnose and fix. To prevent corrosion which can weaken the bolt over time, these parts are either stainless or finished with a rust preventative coating such as black oxide. The head on these studs and bolts is normally a 12 point which allows easier tightening in cramped spaces.
