Exhaust Heat Shields
Exhaust Heat Shields

Exhaust heat shields are used on vehicles,in order to protect other components on the undercarriage, from the heat of the exhaust pipes. Heat shields are typically thin sheets of metal or carbon fiber which are held in place by rods that are connected to the chassis. The heat shield actually sits over the exhaust and not on top of it because the heat from the exhaust could quickly be transferred to the thin heat shield which would make it useless. Without the use of a heat shield nearby components can be damaged if exposed to long periods of direct heat. This is especially true in many newer car which use sensors and many other fragile components which can be easily damaged by the hot exhaust. Since the exhaust resides close to the floor pan, an uncovered exhaust can heat up the interior which can make for an uncomfortable ride for anyone inside. Using a heat shield to prevent all of this should be done because it is a fairly cheap and easy to install component. Over the years, a new material has been invented which can be wrapped around the exhaust to keep the heat directed in the pipes. This new wrap is very useful on vehicles with customized exhaust pipes which run into tight spaces that a shield would not be able to protect.
