Engine Valve Cover Gaskets
Valve cover gaskets are used in between the cylinder head, and the valve covers,in order to create an air tight seal. This type of gasket comes in many different sizes which depend on the cylinder head configuration and the number of cylinders in the block. Engines that have more cylinders will normally have a larger block which will require a bigger valve cover gasket. Some of these larger engines are shaped like a V which means there are two cylinder heads. Since there are two cylinder heads, a gasket must be used on both of them before the valve cover can be put on.
Since oil is being pumped up through the pushrods and dispersed to all the parts under the valve covers, it is possible that oil can make its way through the cracks and crevices between the valve cover and cylinder head. The main job of the valve cover gasket is to prevent this leaking from occurring. The valve cover is often the source of oil leaks in an engine which is why it plays such an important rule. Leakage of the valve cover gasket is more prevalent in older engines that just have cracked or deteriorating gaskets. This gasket is fairly easy to replace and can usually be done by a person with very little knowledge of engines. Although a leaking valve cover gasket is not a serious problem, it should be replaced as soon as possible.
