Timing Components

Timing components on the engine are important because they ensure that all the other components on the engine, operate correctly and at the proper time. Without these components running properly, the engine would not run smooth and may not even run at all. The most common reason why these components may have their timing messed up is caused by parts breaking or being installed wrong. A timing component that is not installed correctly or is malfunctioning can cause things such as valves to open at the wrong time which is why the engine may run sluggishly or not run at all. Since timing components are so critical to a proper running engine, it is important that they are well kept and checked regularly.

Timing Belts

Timing belts are positive transfer belts that can track relative movement. This belt is part of the internal combustion engine and controls the timing of the engines valves. Timing belts replaced the timing chains that were popular until the early 1970’s. This belt has teeth that fit into a matching toothed pulley. When this belt is correctly tensioned, they run at a constant speed, have no slippage, and will transfer direct motion for indexing or timing purposes. Timing belts have started replacing chains or gears. Advantages of a belt over chains or gears include not having to lubricate it, and less noise being created. Timing belts need the least tension out of all the belts and are among the most efficient. These belts can handle up to 200 hp at speeds of 16,000 ft/min. Continue Reading -->

Engine Timing Degree Wheels

Timing degree wheels are used when building or reassembling an engine to ensure that the timing functions are correct on the camshaft centerline, valve timing, TDC, BDC, and other components. Making sure all these components are timed correctly will ensure make the engine run efficiency and at maximum performance. Having a timing degree wheel is necessary for anyone who builds engines because it reduces the amount of time it takes to get the engines timing down. Using this wheel will also ensure the greatest accuracy than any other method used when timing an engine. The timing degree wheel does not require large calculations and math skills which makes it easy to use for the everyday person. Continue Reading -->

Engine Timing Gear Drives

Gear drives can be used to connect the crankshaft to the camshaft which will allow control of the engines valves. Using a gear drive instead of a chain or belt drive is common in high powered vehicles and in heavy duty vehicles. Using a set of gears will provide more reliability and resistance to wear because the gears can transfer high amounts of power and torque produced by this part of the engine more efficiently. The typical timing gear drive available on most vehicles will include four drives; one on the camshaft, one on the crankshaft, and the other two in the middle to transfer the momentum from the two larger drives. Engine Timing Chains

A timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshaft which allows for control over the engines valves. This chain is usually located at the bottom portion on the front side of the engine which allows easy access to the engines oil supply that is used to lubricate the chain and the gears that it rides on. Timing chains have been used for this application since vehicles were first produced, but the chain has been somewhat replaced over recent years due to the introduction of belts. Even with belts, the timing chain is still widely used by some manufactures due to its durability and design. Continue Reading -->

Engine Timing Chain Cover

The timing chain cover is used over the timing chain to protect the chain from the contaminants which could degrade the metal which will greatly reduce its lifespan. This cover is usually located on the lower front portion of the block which allows the chain and gears to be located near the engines oil that is used for lubrication. Keeping the chain and its gears in good condition will reduce the risk of a failure which would completely disable the vehicle until another chain can be installed. The timing chain cover can be made out of steel, plastic, or aluminum depending on the type of engine and its application. Most modern engines have started using aluminum or plastic because they are light weight and easier to manufacture than steel which is more common in older vehicles. Continue Reading -->

Engine Timing Sets- Chain & Gears

Timing sets that involve a chain may also come with the gears since they too will also wear out due to the constant rubbing of the chain while riding on the gears. Buying a set is the most cost effective way to get all of these parts when the whole assembly needs to be replaced. This set will usually come with the two gears that connect to the crankshaft and camshaft, and a new chain which rides on these gears to transfer the power from the crankshaft to the cam.
