Engine Pre-Oiler Systems & Accumulators
Pre-oiler systems and accumulators are used in vehicles, and prevent wear from occurring during start-up. Since over 80 percent of engine wear occurs during start-up, getting a device to help prevent this wear is a good idea. This product is needed because most of the oil which lubricates parts such as the camshaft, crankshaft, connecting rod, bearing, and other components will come off and drain back down to the oil pan. When the engine is started, those parts have little protection against wear until the oil is pumped in.
A pre-oiler system is designed to pump oil onto all of the engines crucial components before the engine is even started. This will greatly increase the life span of the engine which is the most important and expensive component on the vehicle. Once the engine is started and ran for a few seconds, the pre-oiler system will refill to ensure that there is oil stored for the next cold start-up.
Accumulators are used on race cars and high performance vehicles that may be more prone to taking tight turns. As a vehicle takes a sharp turn, the oil in the oil pan is likely to shift which can uncover the oil pump pickup. This would cause air to be sucked into the engine instead of oil which can cause excessive amounts of wear.
The oil accumulator prevents this by storing a chamber filled with pressurized oil. When the oil pressure in the engine drops, the accumulator will feed this pressurized oil into the engine until the pump is able to build up pressure again. Once the pressure of the pump reaches normal levels, it takes over pumping oil into the engine and at the same time will refill the accumulator. Vehicles that need an accumulator the most are those with a stock oil pan and no baffles which work to hold the oil in place.
