Oil Pump Pickup
Oil Pump Pickup

The oil pump pickup is a tube, which extends from the bottom of the oil pan, to the oil pump. One end of the oil pickup tube bolts to the oil pump or engine block while the other end holds the strainer. The strainer has a mesh screen that can strain large particles from the oil before they pass into the inlet side of the oil pump. It is important that these large particles are stopped because they can cause damage to the inside of the pump when they pass through. This strainers come in either a floating or fixed type and is located in this position because it is one of the few places were oil is funneled into only one passage way which ensures that all of it gets stained. Some of these assemblies incorporate a safety valve that opens if the strainers ever becomes clogged, thus bypassing oil to the pump. Pickup tubes are usually made out of a durable metal such as steel or aluminum. These tubes come in a variety of different thicknesses which can be used to limit the amount of oil that is allowed into the oil pump.
