Engine Cylinder Heads & Components
A cylinder head and its components, are the pieces that seal the top of the cylinder, which forms the combustion chamber. The main components used to do this are the cylinder head, cylinder head bolts, and a head gasket to ensure a sealed fit. The cylinder head and all of its components are used to make space for passages that feed air and fuel to a cylinder and allow for exhaust gasses to escape. The cylinder head is also a place to mount common components such as the valves, spark plugs, and fuel injectors.
A cylinder head is the component on the engine that sits above the cylinders on the engine block. When placed correctly on the cylinders, it will seal each cylinder to create the combustion chamber. A head gasket is put between the block and the cylinder head before they are tightened using bolts to prevent any leaking or unevenness between the two metal parts when they seal. The cylinder head is also used to provide space for passages that carry fuel, air, and exhaust into and out of the cylinder. Valves, fuel injectors, and spark plugs are often mounted on the cylinder head because of its placement on the engine. Continue Reading -->
Cylinder head bolts are used to secure the cylinder head onto the engine block. These bolts are usually long since they run through most of the valvetrain on most engines. The actual length and amount of threading on the bolt will vary depending on the size and height of the cylinder head being installed. It is recommended that all of the cylinder head bolts should be replaced when taking off the cylinder head for repair. Replacing the bolts is important because these bolts are torque to very high specs which can cause the bolts to stretch over time. On engines that have seen a lot of use, it is almost guaranteed that these bolts have been stretched which can cause problems if they were reinstalled into the engine. Used head bolts will experience a decrease in clamping power which can cause improper sealing, cylinder head warpage, leakage, and other problems. Continue Reading -->
