Connecting Rod Bolts
Connecting Rod Bolts

Connecting rod bolts are extremely strong bolts, that hold the connecting rod to the crankshaft. These bolts have to be so strong because the crankshaft is moving so violently that it is constantly pushing and pulling on the connecting rod. To withstand these stresses, the bolts are usually cold rolled after heat treatment which makes them more resistant to fatigue. The material used to make these bolts is usually alloy or carbon steel which is extremely resistant to bending, cracking, or becoming brittle. To ensure these bolts don’t get jarred loose by the changing motion, they are torqued to a specific amount which depends on the size of the engine and its manufacture. The tensile strength of most of these connecting rod bolts is in excess of 200,000 psi which is a testament to the strength and reliability under the worst conditions. Since these bolts play such a crucial rule in the engine, it is a good idea to replace them whenever they are removed because some types of connecting rod bolts will actually expand in length once they are torqued which will make them not torque right again if reused.
