A dashboard is the housing in front of the driver which holds the gauges and other controls needed for vehicle operation. The dashboard also covers up any exposed electrical wires and exposed surfaces. The dashboard houses the steering wheel, airbags,GPS systems, speakers, the glove compartment box,and vents for heating, defrosting, and air conditioning.
Throughout history, dashboards were made of wood or metal. By 1970, manufacturer's began installing dashboards with soft padding, made from polyurethane foam, and covered with polyvinyl chloride,or leather.
Early model dashboards had unique designs, colors, and chrome components, which made the vehicle look more appealing, however the chrome's shiny surface interfered with the driver's vision. Late model vehicle's use unique gauges, and digital readouts,to make the vehicle look more appealing.
