Gauges & Accessories: Brake Pressure Gauge

The purpose of the brake pressure gauge is to determine the amount of pressure reaching each caliper. This assists in determining if both the front and rear brakes, are receiving the proper amount of pressure,in order to balance the braking system. The brake pressure must be able to produce 1,200 psi system pressure under severe braking conditions, but the minimum pressure that should be reached when braking is 1,000 psi. Therefore the typical brake pressure gauge ranges from 0 to 3,000 psi. In order for the brake pressure to reach its optimal performance levels, it is essential that the entire brake system is balanced. In doing so, the pedal force, system pressure, and lever travel, all need to be adjusted accordingly. A balanced system will often display the four following characteristics: lever moves the entire stroke of the master cylinder, lever that moves comfortably in the confines of a car, the car uses a reasonable amount of force to reach the desired system pressure, and the system is aligned,in order to minimize lever travel. If the system is not balanced a variety of different problems could occur. First, if the vehicle has a spongy pedal; this could be a sign of air in the system, bad surface rotors, calipers not square to disc, and faulty master cylinder. Second, if the brakes lock up; this is a sign of the master cylinder not being able to return to the fully retracted location when released. Third, if the brake pads have experienced excessive pad wear or if the disc experiences excess heat. Overall, the brake pressure gauge is an excellent tool for racers, and car enthusiasts who drive the vehicle through the toughest performance conditions.
