Automatic Transmission Shift Kit
An automatic transmission shift kit is used to improve the shifting characteristics of a standard-stock transmission. Typically, a shift kit can be installed without removing the transmission from the vehicle, if this is done, plenty of clearance is needed in order for someone to be able to get under the vehicle, and work on the transmission. A major advantage to installing an automatic transmission shift kit, is that it is an inexpensive and quick way to improve vehicle acceleration, without doing major modifications to the engine.
A shift kit can also provide a shorter shift, from first to second gear, which means a better launch, off the starting line. Stacked, late and early shifts can also be reduced or eliminated, depending on the shift kit installed. Some shift kits are designed to be used for towing, which allow the vehicle to downshift and hold the transmission in the lower gear. This is useful when going down a steep grade hauling a heavy load. While other shift kits are designed for a smoother ride, this is accomplished by engaging the gears smoothly, instead of slamming in to gear. Another type of transmission shift kit is for performance use, this allows the driver to have more control of when the vehicle is shifted, which keeps the RPM’s in the desired range,in order to maximize the engine's power band.
It is important to note that the shift feel, and performance gains, depend on many variables such as, vehicle weight, tire diameter, differential ratio, engine torque, and converter stall speed.
