Automatic Transmission Flex Plates
A flex plate is part of a vehicles drive train, in automatic transmission vehicles, and it is used in place of a flywheel, in manual transmissions. Flex plates are only used in automatic transmission vehicles. The flex plate is mounted to the torque converter, which generates the torque,in order to drive the vehicle. Since a flex plate replaces a flywheel, it is also used for starting the vehicle. A ring gear is typically welded to the outside of the flex plate, which is used by the starter, to turn over the vehicles motor. Flex plates are available in many sizes and tooth counts, and it is important to replace the current flex plate, with one that is of the same diameter, and tooth count.
